NEWS: Got Questions?  We have an excellent series of studies concerning Christian teachings at https://www.svlchurch.org/about-us/lutheranism-101/  This is a great resource for learning more about Lutheranism and what we believe/confess.   Do you have questions about Baptism or heaven?  Questions about Jesus or Mary?  Here is a GREAT resource.

“Wine on the Patio” will be on Friday, September 1, 6:30-8:00 at the Kolkmans on their back patio.  Bring wine (or other beverage) to share plus also an hors d’oeuvres, appetizer or snack to go with that to share.   All are welcome!  Questions?  Email kolkmanallen@gmail.com

PRAYERS: Today we remember Chet Laird in our prayers. In our Summer of Prayer series, we pray for the “harvest” in Oceanside (those who are ready to hear God’s Word). We pray for the laborers for God’s word, that the harvest may be plentiful and that all Christians in Oceanside would have a heart for the lost. We continue to pray for the Woodward family as well: Eric, who is hospitalized and very ill, as well as Carole and Bruce as they are managing the situation.

 READINGS: Esther 7; Psalm 59; 1 Thessalonians 3:6-13

Going Too Far?”
August 31, 2023

Matthew 16:21-23 – From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” But He turned and He said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a hindrance to Me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

What a temptation that must have been to Jesus! He’s just had this great moment when Peter recognizes Him for who He truly is: “The Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16b). And now Peter wants Him to avoid the path to the cross. How could he get things so right and then so wrong?

Because it’s no good at all if Jesus’ followers know who He is, but refuse to agree with what He’s doing. Jesus came here for a purpose: to lay down His life for the sake of the whole human race, so that we could be forgiven, rescued, and made children of God. That meant going to the cross. That meant suffering, death, and resurrection. The road would be hard enough to walk. The last thing Jesus needed on top of that was someone He loved whispering the devil’s suggestions in His ear.

And so Jesus pushed back, pretty violently, too. He called Peter Satan! You don’t get much worse than that. Every time I read it I can’t help seeing Peter’s shocked face. Did Jesus have to be so extreme about it? Did He go too far?

But the measure of Jesus’ pushback is the measure of His love for you and for me. He will let nothing, not even a dear disciple, stand in the way of rescuing us. It’s the whole reason He came. Nothing and nobody is going to stop Him from saving us—from bringing us home again, safe and sound, to God the Father. Jesus will do whatever He has to so that we will live. That’s how much He loves you.

WE PRAY: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your commitment to saving me. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

1. Have you ever over-reacted to something?

2. Was it really an over-reaction, or did the people around you not understand?

3. When do you think Peter finally understood Jesus’ reaction?

Today’s Bible in a Year Reading: 2 Chronicles 15-16; 2 Corinthians 5

Luther’s Morning Prayer

In the morning, as soon as you get out of bed, you are to make the Sign of the Cross and say:

“God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit watch over me. Amen.”

Then, kneeling or standing, say the Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. In addition recite this prayer as well:

“I give thanks to you, my heavenly Father through Jesus Christ your dear son, that you have protected me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you that you would also protect me today from sin and all evil, so that my life and actions may please you completely. For into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.”

After singing a hymn or whatever else may serve your devotion, you can go about your day joyfully!

Luther’s Evening Prayer

In the evening, when you go to bed, you are to make the Sign of the Cross and say:

“God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit watch over me. Amen.”

Then, kneeling or standing, say the Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. In addition recite this prayer as well:

“I give thanks to you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have graciously protected me today, and I ask you to forgive me all my sins, where I have done wrong, and graciously to protect me tonight. For into your hands I commend myself: my body, my soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel be with me, so that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.”

You can now go to bed quickly and cheerfully.
